Hiking Speed & Terrain Rating Info

Guests are welcome on our guided hikes. Choose a hike suited to your interests and physical abilities. Be honest with yourself in judging your abilities, remembering that we tire more quickly when walking on snow/rough terrain. Consult the hike description for the hike speed, length, and difficulty of terrain (if in doubt, contact the hike leader) which are explained in the charts below.

Speed of Hike

 Slow 2 to 3 km/hr
 Moderate 3 to 4 km/hr
 Brisk/Fast 5+ km/hr

Terrain of Hike

Level 1  Well defined trails, gentle inclines. Hiking boots not required. Beginner-friendly; recommended for newcomers to club activities.
Level 2Generally on trail. May be hilly, with light bushwhacking, some rough spots or obstacles. Boots recommended.
Level 3Rough terrain (one or more of extensive bushwhacking, steep sections, long climbs and descents, beaver dams or other obstacles, rock scrambling). Boots, experience and a high level of fitness essential.

    Spencer Gorge

Sunday, March 31 - Spencer Gorge: The "Doin' It Right !" Hike - This will be a modified re-do, or a "Take Two" of the spectacular but flawed Spencer Gorge hike of March 17. It will consist of three up-and-back hikes, back to back: a) a hike up the escarpment to "The Peak", an overlook over the Dundas valley; b) a hike up the gorge into the base of Tews Falls, (on a far easier trail than the one taken on the 17th) and c) a hike up the gorge to the base of Webster's Falls along the former route of the Bruce Trail.

There will likely be some slippery mud, a few walks along the edge of steep drops, and some big tree trunks to climb over. Bring lunch / snacks.

Level 2+. Pace moderate, with time for photo opps. Distance 14km

Meet at the covered bridge lot on Gordon St., Guelph at 9 AM. for the carpool. Max. of 15 hikers, registration required.

If anyone wants to drive themselves to Dundas, they should contact leader for the trailhead / parking location.

    Leader, Bill Mungall mungallbill@gmail.com

For those unable to make this hike, we will post instructions on our website as to how this hike can be done on your own.

Andy Goldsworthy is a British nature sculpture artist and photographer who only uses natural materials. Once he is finished a nature sculpture, he takes a photo of it and lets it return to nature. We’ll be doing the same thing, working individually or in small groups, according to the preferences of the participants.

Keeping in mind respect for nature, the individuals and small teams will find a place that sparks their interest, and create a sculpture in that place, that works in harmony with it, using only materials that they find in the area. (Remember not to damage any living plants, etc.).

We will start by reviewing the Seven Elements of Design and looking at some examples of Andy Goldsworthy's work to help stimulate ideas for the creation of our sculptures, remembering to be playful and to experiment for greater impact.

Once the “sculptures” are complete then the individual or team will put our photographic skills to work to take a picture which will be the permanent record, as the nature sculpture will be left to return to a natural state.

Based on the experiences of thousands of students who have created their own Nature Sculptures participants can be assured of a most enjoyable experience and a great picture to share.
