Hiking Speed & Terrain Rating Info

Guests are welcome on our guided hikes. Choose a hike suited to your interests and physical abilities. Be honest with yourself in judging your abilities, remembering that we tire more quickly when walking on snow/rough terrain. Consult the hike description for the hike speed, length, and difficulty of terrain (if in doubt, contact the hike leader) which are explained in the charts below. 

Speed of Hike

 Slow 2 to 3 km/hr
 Moderate 3 to 4 km/hr
 Brisk/Fast 5+ km/hr

Terrain of Hike

Level 1  Well defined trails, gentle inclines. Hiking boots not required. Beginner-friendly; recommended for newcomers to club activities.
Level 2Generally on trail. May be hilly, with light bushwhacking, some rough spots or obstacles. Boots recommended.
Level 3Rough terrain (one or more of extensive bushwhacking, steep sections, long climbs and descents, beaver dams or other obstacles, rock scrambling). Boots, experience and a high level of fitness essential.

     Come and join in the "Syrup in the City" Festival happening from 10 until 1 pm. at John McRae Public School (189 Water Street, Guelph). Participants learn about pioneer logging techniques, how to make maple syrup, and tree identification.

We will explore the trail towards the junction of Laird Rd and Hanlon Creek Boulevard, passing some interesting wooded areas and circling two ponds.      This is a great hike, looping along the Bruce Trail near Scottsdale Farm, north of Georgetown.  The meeting place is on Trafalgar Road north of Hwy 7, opposite the Cango gas Station (13252 Trafalgar Rd. Hwy 7) (Silvercreek) at 10:00am, and a three minute drive takes us to the parking lot at Scottsdale Farm. 

    We will follow the Bruce and a couple of side trails returning to the cars around 4:00ish.  Wear appropriate clothing, and footwear (rocks can be slippery), lunch and water are essential.

     In partnership with Doors Open Guelph and the Guelph Arts Council, we walk back a short, easy trail over the Marcolongo Farm (first farm south of Springfield golf course on east side of Gordon St.) to visit the most important natural feature in Guelph, Halls Pond.  40 minute hikes all day from 10 till 3:00.      PASSPORTS REQUIRED – (makeup hike from a rainout last fall) we hike from Lewiston to the Horseshoe Falls, 18 km in all on NY State Park trails. There is no more spectacular hike in Eastern North America, as standing waves in the Whirlpool rapids are 15+ feet high, and lots of water will be rampaging down the river come May.      Please join The Guelph Hiking Club for a free, casual bike ride to kick off Spring and enjoy the Magnificent Magnolia Trees in blossom.The trip will begin at Speed River Cycle at 135 Wyndham St. N, at 1pm.  For added fun we're having a costume contest to brighten the day. We will ride about 12km to visit several Magnolia trees and other Spring blossoms in and around Downtown Guelph as well as other activities. We will be riding mainly on quiet residential streets and trails. Make sure you pack your camera and to get some beautiful shots! There will be prizes for the Best Dressed Cyclist, Most Outlandish Ensemble, and Best Spring Bonnet, so get your best outfit ready!  We will finish with a garden party. Helmets are encouraged.

     The bridges of Madison County have nothing on Guelph! Starting from graceful Gow's Bridge, we'll follow the Speed, crossing 11 of Guelph's bridges (with brief commentaries). Our hike will take us through parkland and along the Gus Stahlman and Royal Recreation Trails and back, ending at the Boathouse. Meet at 9:30 am in Royal City Park (west side of Gordon).  Park along laneway near the McCrae Blvd end.
