Radial Line Trail – Section 6 bridge upgrades
Where the RLT section 6 briefly follows the railbed of the former Radial Line (east of Kong Hill, and near the Blue Springs Golf Course) it also crosses Blue Springs Creek. We’ve had two rudimentary bridges there for many years, but one in particular was getting fairly old, and in 2021 we decided to replace it.
This work was completed in 3 stages. First, we built new cribs beside the existing bridge.
| Next we placed new logs across the creek, and then installed deck boards on top.
| Finally, we removed the old bridge and installed a new handrail.

| The new bridge is definitely safer in the winter!

The second bridge was shorter in length, and had been made of bigger logs. We decided these existing logs were substantial enough for many more years of service, and so we simply added deck boards on top.
| A big challenge for this project was getting the materials (wooden deck boards and tools) over to this fairly remote location. The Scouts Camp generously allowed us to use their parking lot as a staging area, even though the Camp itself was closed at the time, due to COVID. Then we had to wheelbarrow those materials down the railbed for about 1 km. to reach the job site.

Thanks to a long list of GHTC trail maintenance volunteers who worked together on these bridge upgrades, for the benefit of our many RLT section 6 hikers!
