Volunteer Opportunities

We appreciate all individuals who are looking to help by Volunteering. However, we recognize that some may have specific talents and skills that we could use in a particular professional manner. Even though the GHTC is a Non-Profit Volunteer Organization, we very much take pride in our Club and run it as a proper charity. Therefore, all Volunteers will need to apply and be approved by our Executive Committee before proceeding. Yet, having said that, we’re really good at finding a task that matches everyone’s skill sets.

Executive Committee

Executive Committee

  • Board positions include President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer which are elected at the Annual General Meeting; we do not require that you hold any particular position before moving into another position, but we do prefer that board members commit to a full year or two, or three!
  • Committee Leads include Membership Coordinator, Social Convenor, Newsletter Editor, Trail Coordinators, Hiking Program Coordinator, Publicity Coordinator, and Website Administrator, which are positions appointed by the broader Committee.
  • We meet monthly from September to June to discuss Club business.

Trail Maintenance: Section Leaders, Work-Party Participants

Reporting to the Trail Coordinators, these volunteers assist with ongoing or ad hoc trail maintenance activities:
  • Ongoing light maintenance activities to ensure trail is passable and hiker friendly.
  • Ad hoc work-parties where a team tackles larger projects, such as installing water bars or building a small bridge over a creek.
  • Equipment and materials are coordinated by our Trail Coordinator or Section Leaders.
  • And there are options for reimbursement for “Chainsaw” certification courses.

Social Events

Reporting to the Social Convener, this role involves assisting at one of our social events during the year.

  • Work with the venue to ensure tables, chairs and food stations are in the correct locations and easily accessible.
  • Setup and dismantling the decorations, photo op backdrop and props.
  • For Trek & Tell Presentations in particular, work with the venue to setup all AV equipment and be available to receive and load the presentation. You may be asked to work the lights or click-through the slide show, as requested by a speaker.

Hike Leadership

Reporting to the Hiking Program Coordinator, these hike leaders plan and lead hikes throughout the seasons:

  • Prospective new leaders may begin by helping other leaders, being mentored, and learning more about Hike Leader Training.
  • It is a requirement to be certified by taking a 7.5hr Hike Ontario course. $85 fee (only $25 for GHTC Members).
  • After leading 3 GHTC hikes, the Certified Hike Leader can request reimbursement for the paid course fee. And there are further options for reimbursement for First Aid training courses.
  • Hike lengths, pace, and location are chosen by the leader and are noted in the published hike description.
