It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian George van Nostrand, long-time dedicated GHTC member and volunteer, on Sunday, October 6 2024.
Brian cherished his family and was most happy pursuing quiet activities - relaxing at home or in the neighbour’s backyard; camping; hiking; canoeing; and whittling. In his retirement years he made items in his workshop, and volunteered doing trail maintenance on RLT section 2 (the Arkell Springs property). He also did trail maintenance for the Arboretum at the University of Guelph, and set up and took down dance floors with his wife. He was a passionate reader and gardener, enjoyed listening to music, did regular fitness activities, and was an avid fan of watching Formula 1 Grand Prix races.
Brian was instrumental in creating our Google Maps trail maps that all members can access. It is a meaningful and impactful legacy that will benefit members of the GHTC and Guelph community for years.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A gathering to remember Brian will be held later. Family and friends are invited to remember Brian by taking a forest walk at the Arboretum on the Memorial Forest Open House Day held in September every year.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate your support to one of the organizations that Brian was passionate about The Guelph Hiking Trail Club, The Guelph Arboretum or Ontario Parks.
A tree will be planted in memory of Brian G. van Nostrand in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
