Mushroom Identification Hike (GHTC members only. Limit 18)
When: Saturday 27/09, 9:00 a.m. - noon
(rain date: Sunday 28/09, same time & place).
Where: Meet at 9:00 in Starkey Hill parking lot, 735 Arkell Rd., Puslinch.
What: An opportunity to get to know the mycological world around us. Under the guidance of expert Tim Myles, we will search for mushrooms in either the Starkey or Arkell Springs forests, depending on conditions. No Picking! Identification will be done in place. Bring phone/camera and pen & paper to record your finds. You might also wish to download an Ontario-specific mushroom identification app from the internet. Some are free. Mushrooms don't grow conveniently on trails, so dress appropriately for bushwhacking -- long pants and sleeves (ticks are still active) and sturdy footwear. If you don't know how to spot poison ivy, google it to know in advance what it looks like. Bring water. Deet bug spray your choice but recommended. Terrain may be rough, so poles helpful.
Note: This hike is not measured in speed or kilometers but in the variety of our finds and in the fun of exploring the little-known forest underworld.
Did you know that mushrooms are more closely related to animals than plants, and humans and mushrooms share 50% of their DNA?
