Hiking Speed & Terrain Rating Info

Guests are welcome on our guided hikes. Choose a hike suited to your interests and physical abilities. Be honest with yourself in judging your abilities, remembering that we tire more quickly when walking on snow/rough terrain. Consult the hike description for the hike speed, length, and difficulty of terrain (if in doubt, contact the hike leader) which are explained in the charts below.

Terrain of Hike

Level 1  Well defined trails, gentle inclines. Hiking boots not required. Beginner-friendly; recommended for newcomers to club activities.
Level 2Generally on trail. May be hilly, with light bushwhacking, some rough spots or obstacles. Boots recommended.
Level 3Rough terrain (one or more of extensive bushwhacking, steep sections, long climbs and descents, beaver dams or other obstacles, rock scrambling). Boots, experience and a high level of fitness essential.

    Pace: 4 km/hr – approximately 9km – 2.25hrs

    Hike description: Enjoy an early spring hike with many of the birds out or passing through and the plant buds beginning to sprout. There may also still be a large volume of water flowing down the Grand River, a great view from the Trestle Bridge.

    Starting from the Beatty Line parking lot, we will hike along the Cataract Trail to Elora then walk back to take the Museum Trail to the Trestle Bridge Trail and check out a view of the Grand River. Then we will go down the stairs to Aboyne Forest and possibly the Grand River depending on the river conditions. We will hike through the Aboyne Forest then return to the parking lot via the Trestle Bridge trail. 

    Trail conditions: The trails are generally flat and gravel, except in the Aboyne Forest. Here there will be rocky and root sections. There will also be a few staircases to go up and down. There could still be a few wet, muddy and icy sections.

    Parking: parking lot at 389 Beatty Line North, Fergus – the parking lot is across from Fergus Auto Parts. Extra parking at Grand River Pharmacy Fergus plaza

    Required: hiking shoes/boots, dress for the weather, health card, personal first aid kit

    Join us for an evening hike on the Radial Line Trail on parts of Sections 3 and 4!  We will start our hike along a farm field and then head into the woods and down a steep bank into a creek valley.  After crossing the creek on the Cove Bridge, we’ll pass through a mature hardwood forest followed by a cedar wood and another creek crossing over a smaller bridge.  Once we get to the Guelph Line, we’ll take a snack and water break and then turn around and enjoy everything from the other side on the way back!

    The ground is uneven with rocks and roots in places.  There are some steep hills to go down and up, and the path is muddy at times. Please wear appropriate footwear. A very short part of this hike is along the shoulder of a travelled road.

    Carpool option: Meet at the Covered Bridge on Gordon Street in Guelph at 5:20pm for a 5:30pm sharp departure by carpool to the trailhead.

    Trailhead option: Meet at 5:50pm at the trailhead at the T-junction where the east end of Arkell Road meets the Nassagaweya 1st Line (park on the west side of the road by the super mailbox just south of Arkell Road). Hike departure is at 6pm sharp so as to make it out and back before sundown.     Hike description: Starting from the Barber Scout parking area, we will follow the Radial Line trail to the Smith Property Trail and complete this loop then return to the parking lot. We will meander through forests along the Eramosa River. There is a section of road walking along Cooks Mill Rd. Note: the trail has muddy and wet sections.

    Pace: 4 km/hr, approx. 8 km, 2 hrs

    Parking: 733 Stone Rd E, Guelph – look for the sign for Barber Scout camp, just by the train tracks and go down the hill driveway to the parking area

    Required: hiking footwear (waterproof would be helpful), dress for spring weather, I.D.,

    Hike Rating:  Level 2 with some rocky, uneven terrain & tree roots. 

     

    Hike Description:  For this Spring hike, wear something bright and/or flowery!

    We’ll follow the main Bruce Trail on this in-and-out route and pass through beautiful forests and view large moss-covered crevices and enjoy an incredible view of Milton from the ridgetop trail.  This route takes you to the Dufferin Gap – the only break in the entire 725k long, 450-million-year-old Niagara Escarpment. This 40m-long gap is now spanned by a bridge that was built in 1991 and funded by a combination of corporate, private and public funds.  

     

    Recommended: Hiking poles and sturdy hiking shoes or boots.  Bring water, snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen, health card/ID and wear long pants.

    Dress for the weather and bring rain gear (just in case). No dogs please.

     Details:          

    This is an out & back hike.  We will take the Main Bruce Trail from the Pear Tree parking lot.  From there we will follow the Al Shaw Side Trail, Hilton Falls Side Trail and then the Vanderleck Side Trail to 17 Sideroad.  There is one stile to climb over at 15th S.R.  After a short break, we will return via the same beautiful route.

     What to Bring:

    Water, snacks, sturdy footwear, hiking poles recommended, insect repellent, sunscreen, rain gear (just in case), Health Card/ID, personal first aid kit.  Dress for the weather.

    Guelph City Nature Challenge: Speed River Trail to Niska Road

     When: April 24, 2026, 9:00am-11:00am

    Location: Speed River Trail

    Parking: Park and meet at the gates of the former Guelph Humane Society (first driveway west of Hanlon Parkway)

    Distance: 3.7km one way

    Difficulty: Level 1, slow pace

     Hike Description: Join Wally on a leisurely hike along the Speed River Trail section to Niska Road. This hike is part of the ‘Guelph City Nature Challenge’, where participants will take pictures of wild plants and wildlife and upload them to iNaturalist. The City Nature Challenge is “an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities”. Depending on pace, the hike will work its way towards Niska Road, turning around at the 10am mark to make it back for 11am.

     Prior to the Hike: If you wish to participate in the Challenge, please ensure you have downloaded the iNaturalist app and joined the Guelph City Nature Challenge 2026.

     What to Bring: Water, snacks, hiking shoes/boots, charged smartphone (for taking pictures and downloading to iNaturalist), ID/health card, first aid kit.

    BT Iroquoia Section E2E - Day 6: Highway 6 to Guelph Line, 19 km

    Hike description:
    Series of End-to-End (E2E) hikes through the Iroquoia section of the Bruce Trail. This is a series of 9 hikes, to complete ~ 122 km of this section, running from Grimsby to Milton along the Niagara Escarpment. Come and hike with Joanna, earn a badge or just have fun and, socialize. The Iroquoia section has lots to offer: beautiful waterfalls, few wineries, spectacular views specially passing near Hamilton, Mount Nemo and Kelso, and a varied terrain. For those whose goal is to earn a badge we will create a log. Badge cost is 10$ for BTC members or 15 for non-members. Note, you need to hike the full length of Iroquoia section to earn a badge, but if you are not able to join us on one of the hikes, you can re-do the hike on your own.

    Day 6: Highway 6 to Guelph Line will be one of the longest hike of this series. And one more time we will see one of the famous falls of Hamilton area: Great Falls. We will also walk along beautiful and bubbly Grindstone creek. And we will pass by Kerncliff park. 

    Where: The Bruce Trail Reference, Edition 30, Map 9.
    Length: Approx. 19 km
    Category: Linear with car shuttle.
    Pace and duration: Moderate, 3.25 km/hr. About 6 hours + car shuttle time.
    Hike level: Difficult. Some hilly sections and uneven terrain. Be also aware of the length of the hike and early spring conditions.

    Parking and departure: Meet at 9:00 am at roadside parking where trail crosses Guelph Line, South of N 1 Sideroad. (43.388366, -79.854231). Please do not block farm Gate. From there we will carpool to the start of the hike from roadside parking on the north end of Old Guelph Rd. (43.307417, -79.911580).


    Directions: Please use your favourite GPS app to obtain directions.
     
    What to wear and bring: This is an early spring hike, please dress accordingly in layers, and bring a hat and sunscreen. Wear good hiking boots: rain and mud or sun and dry weather - all is possible. Bring rain gear. Hiking poles are optional if you like using them. Bring water, snacks and pack a lunch - we will stop for lunch around noon.

    Hike pace: Moderate to difficult, 4.5 km/hr. 

    Hike difficulty: Level 2-3. Moderate to difficult. Some hilly sections and uneven terrain. Be also aware of the length of the hike and very early spring conditions.

    GHTC members and their friends are invited to a special spring event celebrating nature, learning, and community partnership!

    Join us for An Evening at the Arboretum, hosted in collaboration with the University of Guelph Arboretum. This event is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the important work happening at the Arboretum, including exciting updates coming to the JC Taylor Nature Centre, and enjoy time with hikers.

    Part 1: Guided Walk (6:30–7:30 PM)

    We’ll begin outdoors with a guided walk led by Arboretum staff. Learn about ongoing research, conservation initiatives, and the plans for the upcoming JC Taylor Nature Centre renovations as you explore the Arboretum’s beautiful spring landscape.

    Part 2: Talk with the Arboretum Director (7:30–8:30 PM)

    After the walk, we’ll gather inside the Arboretum Centre for a presentation by Justine Richardson, Director of the Arboretum. Justine will share insights into the Arboretum’s vision, current projects, and the future of the Nature Centre.

    There is no fixed fee for this event. Donations will be accepted at the door, with all contributions supporting the JC Taylor Nature Centre renovation project. Please donate what you are able.

    Beverages and light snacks will be provided.

    We hope you’ll join us for this inspiring evening of learning, community, and connection with nature.

    Speed River Trail End to End

    We will hike the entire Speed River Trail, from Blackbridge Rd in Cambridge, to The Boathouse on Gordon St. in Guelph. See Guelph Hiking Trail Club Handbook for details. 

    Length: 16 km,

    Pace moderate 3-4 km/hr

    Time 4.5 hours plus carpool/Bus time to start. (Bus will be ordered if more than 25 hikers register at 10.00 pp.)

    Level 2 due to length

    Bring Water and a lunch. This hike will run rain or shine.

    Meet at covered bridge parking lot on Gordon for the carpool to Blackbridge, (the Cambridge, west trailhead) . 8:30 am meeting and check in time.

    This hike will be volunteer supported with at least 2 drop out points along the way.  Snacks and water provided at Niska Rd.

    Registration will open April 4th and close on April 30th. 

    What to bring: This is a spring hike, please dress accordingly in layers, and bring a hat and sunscreen. Wear good hiking boots: rain, mud is possible. Bring rain gear.

    Optional hiking Gear: Hiking poles if you like using them.  Bring water, snacks and pack a lunch - we will stop for lunch around noon.

    Our badge for this hike includes completing the Radial Line Trail (E2E in middle to late September 2026). Badges can be purchased at the end of the hike for $5.

    Seventh hike of the series: Guelph Line to Killbride will take us through Mount Nemo. There will be gorgeous views from mount Nemo. There will be ~ 8-9 km of road walking which will help us make good time. Possibly, if weather is good, we will include a side trail: River and Ruin, near Cedar Springs, which will make this hike a little longer - 19 km instead of 16.5 km. 

    Carpooling meeting point: 8:20 am at Carpool Lot Hwy 401 exit 299 Morriston Queen St/Brock Rd S (Hwy 6) https://maps.app.goo.gl/Z2e68eC2KJwFyubx8. (43.451406, -80.120985). Leaving at 8:30 at the latest. Carpooling is an option. Please communicate to hike leader if you will meet there. Please note ads this is a linear hike we will need to make car shuffle.     Hike Description: This is a sequel to the Easter Day hike. Rob and I are joining forces again to bring you a wonderful Mother’s day afternoon of hiking, roasting Weiner’s over a bbq pit and sharing in a ‘potluck’ style lunch. The hike itself will begin at the Mohawk Racetrack where we will wander into Hilton Falls Conservation Area, hike around the reservoir, then stop for lunch at the barbecue pit near the falls. You are free to roam, enjoy roasting your own hot dogs (Rob and I will provide the hot dogs, buns, condiments, paper plates). Please feel free to bring anything you might want to share with the other hikers keeping in mind this will be something you will need to carry along on the hike with you in your backpack. Please ensure all garbage is disposed of respectfully in the provided bins or carry it out with you. After lunch, approximately 30-40 minutes, we will head back to the parking lot to end our hiking experience.

    Recommended: Hiking poles and sturdy hiking shoes or boots. Bring water, snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen, health card/ID and wear long pants. Dress for the weather and bring rain gear (just in case). No dogs please.

    This hike is limited to 20 hikers.
