Hiking Speed & Terrain Rating Info

Guests are welcome on our guided hikes. Choose a hike suited to your interests and physical abilities. Be honest with yourself in judging your abilities, remembering that we tire more quickly when walking on snow/rough terrain. Consult the hike description for the hike speed, length, and difficulty of terrain (if in doubt, contact the hike leader) which are explained in the charts below.

Speed of Hike

 Slow 2 to 3 km/hr
 Moderate 3 to 4 km/hr
 Brisk/Fast 5+ km/hr

Terrain of Hike

Level 1  Well defined trails, gentle inclines. Hiking boots not required. Beginner-friendly; recommended for newcomers to club activities.
Level 2Generally on trail. May be hilly, with light bushwhacking, some rough spots or obstacles. Boots recommended.
Level 3Rough terrain (one or more of extensive bushwhacking, steep sections, long climbs and descents, beaver dams or other obstacles, rock scrambling). Boots, experience and a high level of fitness essential.

Get into the spirit of Halloween. Hike the Devil's Pulpit! Fall colours will be at their peak.

    Carpool:
Meet in the small parking lot by CIBC at 9 Woodlawn Rd. W. by 8:45 AM for an 8:50 AM carpool departure to the trailhead. Because parking is limited at trailhead, please join the carpool.  Limited to 12 because of limited parking at trailhead and because this is a combined GHTC/GVTA hike.

    Hike Description:
On this hike we'll descend and later ascend steep rock faces (on treacherous stairs), scramble over big boulders, and hike three other side trails.

Trailhead is the Grange cross section, 16413 Creditview Rd, Belfountain, ON.,
    (43.791365, -79.975163)

Bruce Side trails hiked: Devil's Pulpit, Ring Kiln, Trimble, Crow's Nest.

Total distance: 12 km. Terrain: very difficult (3). Time moving: 4 hours. Average Pace: slow.

    Descent/Ascent at Devil's Pulpit: approx. 150m.

This won't be a descent into Hell, but it is a difficult hike! Rock scrambling, steep descents and climbs. If you aren't in shape or are uncomfortable with this level of difficulty then please consider another hike more suited to your ability. This won't be a fast hike. Because of the nature of the terrain the average pace will be slow.  This is a combined GHTC / GVTA hike.

    What to Bring:
Bring at least 2 L. of water, snacks, lunch, Hiking Poles, a change of clothes, rain gear. Hiking boots and a good level of fitness are required. Hiking Poles are strongly recommended.

Dress for the weather and in layers. Lunch on trail at halfway point. No dogs please.

Back in Guelph by about 3:00 PM.

BT Toronto E2E – Day 4: Terra Cotta to Badlands, 14 km

    About the HIke:
Join Joanna on this series of hikes through the Toronto section of the Bruce Trail. This is a series of 4 hikes for an End-to-End (E2E). Whether your goal is to hike Bruce Trail, earn the badge of Toronto section, enjoy the summer/fall hikes, have fun and socialize – you are welcome to come for all or just few of those hikes. The Toronto section (about 50 km) of the Bruce Trail is beautiful. We will walk a little more than 50 km as we will start before the Toronto section boundary and at the end pass the end boundary. Along our trek we will walk on high bridge over the quarry, go through the Hole in the Wall, pass through Silver Creek and Terra Cotta Conservation areas and finally see the Cheltenham Badlands.

For those whose goal is to earn a badge we will create a log. We can either do it as group for those interested, or each of you can do it themselves. You do have to walk the full length of Toronto section to receive the badge. But if you are not able to join us on one of the hikes, you can finish it on your own.

Day 4: Terra Cotta to Badlands: We will start our hike form the Winston Churchill Blvd, Terra Cotta conservation area. The highlight of this hike is passing the boundary of the Toronto into Caledon section. Yes!, we are done with the Toronto section. However the biggest highlight lies ahead of us, the Cheltenham Badlands. Again bring cameras. The fall colours might still be there.

Since we will be done with this section we might decide to go for some food / drink after the hike. We will try to find a nice place. Of course this is an optional activity.

Where: The Bruce Trail Reference, Edition 30, Map 14.
    Length: Approx. 14 km
    Category: Linear with car shuttle.
Pace and duration: Moderate, 3.5 km/hr. About 4 hours + car shuttle time.
Hike level: 2 (Moderate). Some hilly sections and uneven terrain; roots. This section has a bit of road walking, some of it just dirt road. But worth the effort to see some great scenery.

Meet at 8:50 am at roadside parking on the east side of Creditview Rd, immediately north of the Grange Sideroad intersection (43.791491, -79.975229). From there we will carpool (we leave 9 am sharp) to the start of the hike, off road parking, located on a very short dirt road off Winston Churchill Blvd, just south of the main trail (43.726474, -79.958225).

If possible, carpool to our meeting point to reduce your carbon footprint and lessen the need for parking space. However please be aware we need some free spots in the car for car shuttles. You can meet Joanna for carpooling at Hwy 401 / Hwy 6 carpool: departure 8:00 am sharp from carpool at Exit 299 Queen St/Brock Rd S (Hwy 6) (43.451356, -80.120937).
